Dangers linger at abandoned Workhouse jail, city mulls future plans

ST. LOUIS - Last week, FOX 2 exposed dangers at the former St. Louis Medium Security Institution (MSI) Jail, also known as the Workhouse. The city's top public safety official now calls the issues there “eye-opening" and says he’s looking into changes to alleviate growing safety concerns. Recently, three young men got into the facility through holes in the fencing and unintentionally locked themselves into an old cell. It’s been three weeks since that incident. Though it may seem humorous, police say it’s no laughing matter.   A spokesman told FOX 2 that city staff had been requested to repair the fencing last week. The same holes in the fences remain.    Highway with ‘Loneliest Road in America’ also runs through St. Louis region “That triggers some concerns for me,” said Alderman Tom Oldenburg of the incident, during Thursday’s meeting with the aldermanic Public Safety Committee.   He asked the Public Safety Director, Charles Coyle, what was being done about those concerns.Closi...

LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - For every police case that leads to criminal charges, there are many others that never make the news.Like a recent scene in Maryland Heights that shut down an entire street but did not lead to criminal charges.Maryland Height Police Lt. Rich Wagner said, “We were able to get the area cleared and allow that individual to come down on his own.” Alderman proposes open-carry trigger law in St. Louis Lt. Violent crime spike has L.A. police chief concerned

While there appears to have been a reduction in all categories of violent crime in Los Angeles, Police Chief Michel Moore expressed serious concern earlier this week about the number of recent shootings and homicides.Moore’s comments came during the Dec. 5 meeting of the L.A. Board of Police Commissioners, the civilian-run body that oversees the department.  “After some eight-plus months of being in the negative on both [shootings and homicides], we saw that trend begin to change in September, October and November,” the police chief said, adding that both of those categories of violent crime were higher this November compared to the same time in 2022. Moore referenced some of the recent violent crime that has occurred, specifically calling out a Granda Hills home invasion on Dec. 2 where the homeowner shot and killed one of four suspects who broke into his family’s house at gunpoint.  The other three suspects fled the scene, though police believe at least one of them was injure...

In a trailer revealed at The Game Awards, Nexon has announced that it’s releasing “The First Descendant” in summer 2024. The four-player cooperative third-person shooter has built some buzz after its reveal and subsequent crossplay open beta on PC and consoles in September.Built on Unreal 5.2, the game puts players in the role of a Descendant who has to fend off the Vulgus, alien invaders who crossed dimensions and brought colossi and destruction to the continent of Ingris. SF commissioner says business was vandalized, 'targeted'

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco Entertainment Commissioner Cyn Wang's business was vandalized Wednesday night, the public official told KRON4. Wang said the suspect caused damage to the business around 11 p.m.Surveillance video (above) shows the suspect using a device to smash the windows of Wang Insurance, located in the Sunset District. Residents in Pleasant Hill neighborhood advised to stay inside

(KRON) -- People who live near 227 Cleopatra Drive in Pleasant Hill are advised by the city's police department to stay inside on Thursday evening.An alert was sent out by police at 7:33 p.m. Police said the notice to stay inside was due to police activity, but they did not elaborate on the nature of the police activity.All inbound and outbound traffic from the Sherman Acres neighborhood is closed, police said.
